Quilter’s Statement: When I heard about this challenge, I immediately thought about quinine, which is used to treat malaria. I knew that quinine was derived from a plant, but I had to do some research to determine which plant. The bark of the cinchona tree is the only natural source of quinine. Quinine has been used to treat malaria since the 17th century! I remember my grandparents telling stories about taking preventive quinine tablets during a safari in Africa in the 1970s. Malaria has a personal interest for me because a former co-worker was a malaria survivor and told me about what it was like to have the disease.
I absolutely love quilt art and am thankful to have stumbled across this site. Some of the quilts in the exhibit are absolutely amazing!
