Imagine 486,000 quilts donated to be distributed around the world. What an impressive campaign Lutheran World Relief ran in 2013 (so close to their goal of 500,000)! The quilts are starting to be being distributed in 16 countries around the world to those in need due to war, disaster and poverty. What a fabulous way to make a tangible, heartfelt gesture of comfort. In times of conflict and after natural disasters there are many immediate needs that aid organizations and governments try to address. A quilt given in this situation might not curb hunger, quench thirst or deal with disease, but it serves the same purpose it does when you give a family member a quilt – a visual and physical reminder that someone cares, a literal symbol of the extension of a helping hand. Quilters are so generous of their time and creative efforts. Bravo to Lutheran World Relief for harnessing that power and sharing it with the world.
